Menu Icons

"Menu icon" covers three visually distinct shapes with different UI meanings: the three-line hamburger (opens a full navigation drawer), the vertical kebab / three dots (opens a contextual dropdown for one item), and the horizontal meatball (usually a toolbar overflow menu). Mixing these up confuses users about what a tap will do, so this page groups all three styles together for easy side-by-side comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hamburger (three horizontal lines) typically opens a full-screen or slide-out navigation menu with multiple top-level destinations. Kebab (three vertical dots) opens a small contextual dropdown tied to one specific item: a row in a list, a card. Meatball (three horizontal dots) is the toolbar-overflow convention, used when a set of already-visible action buttons runs out of space.

Hamburger menus make sense on mobile viewports where horizontal space is limited, or for secondary navigation that most users won't need every visit. On desktop, hiding primary navigation behind a hamburger icon measurably hurts discoverability. Keep top-level links visible when there is room.
