How to use them
Put the file behind any element, set your color, and add one blend line. To change the color later, change only the color: dark mode, brand themes and hover states all reuse the same file.
.surface {
--surface: #f4f1ea;
background: var(--surface) url("/img/paper.jpg") 0 0 / 256px;
background-blend-mode: hard-light;
}
@media (prefers-color-scheme: dark) {
.surface { --surface: #14161c; }
}Why your color stays true
- The color stays exact. Each tile averages 50% grey, and hard-light treats that as "no change". Your brand color stays your brand color.
- Black and white keep their grain. Most tint methods can only darken, so they flatten black and turn white grey. Hard-light can go both ways.
- Text stays readable. The demo picks black or white text for each color, and Copy CSS includes that choice. The grain is too light to change it.

What is a seamless texture?
How do I make my own texture seamless?
Can I get a white or black texture background?
Can I use these textures in commercial projects?
How does one grey file work for every color?
background-blend-mode: hard-light leaves that 50% grey as your color and only moves the lighter and darker grain around it, so the color you see is the color you picked.Will a very light, bright or dark color break the texture?
hard-light and not multiply. Multiply darkens everything, so bright yellow turns mustard, white turns grey and black loses all its grain. Hard-light keeps all three. Test your own color with Any color in the demo.Do the tiles repeat with a visible edge?
What size should I show the tile at?
background-size: 512px or smaller and it stays sharp on high-density screens. Smaller sizes give a finer grain.
